As Promised.

This past weekend, I promised that the next couple of blogs would be more about the house than my personal perspectives…oh you know… about things like cicadas.

So, as promised.  Here ya go!

At some point in time, the house had shutters on it.  But obviously after this picture was taken.

FB_IMG_1452212932196

When I moved in, most of the shutters were gone.  The few that were left were in less than spectacular condition.  In fact, there was only one window that actually had both shutters still left!  Basically, it looks like Halloween around here all year long.

IMG_20150901_165434099

The long term goal is to put the shutters back on the house at some point in the future. But on the priority list around here, repairing the shutters is about 5,781 on the list of things to do.

In the interim however, the shutters are coming in handy, at least the pieces that have fallen off the house that I managed to collect.

With the assistance of this gorgeous antique, dilapidated shutter, I am going to find the new door colors.

For those of you who are feeling froggy…which color would you pick for these big, old 9 foot tall doors??  Feel free to leave your vote in the comment section!

I’ll let you know next week which one was the winner!

Peace out peeps.

Cicada Love

Morning!

So, as we are reaching the end of the Love Season for the 17-Year Cicada here in Northeastern Ohio, I have to admit two things.

One.  I think I might actually start to miss them.

Two.  I have learned a whole new appreciation for their plight in this world.

My largest interaction with them over the last few weeks was at the Parental Homestead while cleaning stalls and working with the ponies.  I’ve dealt with them in water buckets, on halters and lead ropes, getting down my shirt, in my hair and boots, the constant drone of their love call hum…it’s been interesting to say the least.

article-2322449-19A9E558000005DC-188_634x976

Interesting facts I have learned about them.

  1. They are active while they are underground for those 17 years.
  2. Their wings fill with fluid to expand out in order to take flight.
  3. Most dogs love to eat them.
  4. Many get crushed in the mass exodus to make it a tree while emerging from their underground abodes.

Check out more on fun sites like Cicada Mania.

Just to make it slightly more real…

But, I have also had a lot of time to ponder their existence.

2-Cicadas-In-Love

Their main goal upon exiting their tunnels is to procreate the future generations.

So, it makes one wonder….at least me…because I might be the only weirdo on the planet who thinks of things like this…

  1. Do Cicadas have dating preferences?  I mean, when they exit the ground, are they all hung up on the qualifications of their future partner?
  2. Are there ones that play the game?  “Well, I’m just gonna wait and see if something better comes along?”
  3. Are there ones that take on the “hit it and quit it” philosophy?
  4. Is one cicadas song more appealing than another?
  5. Or does Mother Nature just take over and it’s a matter of functionality, not individual preference?

I mean, as humans, it gets so complicated on the journey to find a mate.  There are so many preferences and ideals to be attained, only to be squashed at any point in time.

After swimming in the deep end of the dating cesspool, trust me…I know.

How can these bugs make it look so easy?

Anyway, enough of “Deep Thoughts With Lyndsey” for the morning.  I am sure your brains are starting to bleed from the randomness of trying to follow my thoughts!

I promise the next few posts are going to be all house related!  There is SOOOOO much happening, it’s hard to know where to start.  But there will be LOTS of before and after pics coming!  Most exciting…work on the storm cellar starts next week!  That should provide lots of entertaining stories!

First painting class this  Thursday!  Can’t wait to share the results!  It’s going to be great!

Peace out peeps.

Story Time.

Morning!

When I bought the farm, I promised myself that I would step it up a notch in the world of craftsmanship.  I wanted to be sure to do things of quality, not just in a haste to mark something off of the To Do List.

Now, please understand, I have never really done shoddy work.  I am WAY to OCD for that.

But I wanted this to be different.  I wanted to complete projects in way that they wouldn’t have to be fixed up or finished off later.  I wanted to enjoy the process as much as the end result.  Everything would get done in a timely fashion with the right amount of attention going into all of the details.  It’s the least thing I can do for this place, is to do it right.

This urge came from a story told at my Grandpa B.’s funeral by my Uncle.  It was the first I had heard this tale and it is something that I am reminded of constantly.  Especially around the farm.

Apparently, in his youth, my Uncle had started wallpapering for people.  In a conversation with my Grandpa, my Uncle was asked if he signed his work.  Uncle R. replied that he signed the back of the last piece of wallpaper that he hung on each job.  My Grandpa informed him that he was doing it wrong and that he should sign the FIRST piece of wallpaper he hung.

The reasoning is simple.

If you wait to sign your work, it means you can also decide to NOT sign it.

Maybe you were having a bad day, maybe you were running late and you cut a few corners in the quality department.   Either way, you can decide whether or not you would put your name to your work.

However, if you sign your work at the BEGINNING, you are committed to a higher quality of work from the very start. You can’t get away from the fact that you already put your name your work and have an expectation to live up to.

So, with that being said, I have signed my name to this place.

I am committed.

In so many ways…hee hee hee!

What does this mean in real life?   It means that I actually rebuilt a retaining wall 4 times this week.  Just to get it right.

IMG_20160610_161543036
This is the final version…can’t wait for this area to be done! It’s gonna be ADORABLE!

It also means that I’ll be committed before this house is completed.  For sure.

Stay tuned….I have a expert in the field of sandstone stopping by the house Monday morning to discuss the glorious storm cellar.   Should be awesome.

Peace out peeps.

Oh Damn.

Officially Day 3 of my summer breaks is in the books.

I have to admit, so far, I have been rather productive on my To Do list.  Now, that is not without some serious ADHD moments.

Imagine working on a retaining wall for a half-hour, pausing to spray paint wicker furniture, sewing cushions for said wicker, painting a custom order and then back to the retaining wall.  Best part, that’s just today!

So, yesterday, I finally started tackled one of the big projects around this joint.

The very first time I came to see the house, I noticed this covered up nightmare, where you could see a HINT of a collapsed wall.

IMG_20150901_163332890

I knew that immediately this was going to be a problem.  But because I moved in so late in the year, I beefed it up a little and decided it would have to wait until spring.

So, yesterday was the big reveal day!!! Layers 1 & 2….

This is it folks.  Two words. Hot. Mess.

Make that three words.

Hot. Damn. Mess.

IMG_20160607_095040828

Actually, truth be told….I couldn’t handle it.  So, I came in the house and ate chips.

All I could think was…if I were to click my heels three times in some gorgeous ruby red slippers….

rubyslippersstillcopy

It would magically look like this????

IMG_20160528_172013774 (1)

The best  part was that Momma came down last night.  She literally put her hands on her hips and stared at it, for a good 7 minutes mind you, before she just flat out said, “I don’t know what you’re gonna do about that.”

I started to take a poll on Facebook, so far majority vote is to restore it back to what it was, versus just blocking it up and calling it a day (which is SOOOO Daddy-O’s vote)  So, anyone out in cyberland have a vote?  The best part of that…the vote is the easy part.  Moving those heavy ass sandstone is the problem.

Peace out peeps!

Too Little. Too Late

Morning everyone…

This post is a bit of a PSA.

As we are all fully aware, we are given a very limited piece of time to enjoy this world (when you compare it to the timeline of all existence).  It’s so easy to slip into a groove.  To get busy.  To cut corners.  To take advantage.  To just try and survive.

This week, I had a personal event that occurred that really made me realize how much some things are not worth it.  Every day should be spent happy.  I mean, I am not talking drunk at a party, laughing your pants off happy (that would be really hard on your liver).  But I am talking about the kind of happy that when you go to bed at night you can review the day and think…”Yep, not too shabby.”

Happiness seems so elusive at times.  But I believe it’s because we strive for things that are predetermined by the world around us.

Thank you Pinterest.

But in reality…Your happiness can only be determined by YOU!  I think there are few steps to help you get to it, which I pretty much have to remind myself of on a daily basis.

Set REALISTIC goals.

Bringing some of my teaching wisdom in here!

Sounds easy, huh?  It’s not.  We all want MORE.  It’s monster living inside us that is fed constantly from a sensory overload of EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE we go.  So, step back. Reassess your goals and make sure you are setting yourself up for success.

This is not new crap, we know it.  We just forget it, because the machine of life can take over.

Don’t be the “Too little, too late” person.

Better-three-hours-too-soon-than-a-minute-too-late-600x428

Whatever you do…don’t become the  “Too little, too late” person.  When we cut those corners, cheat time or people, we become THAT person.  The person who will regret those choices.

So, take the time to…

Love those in your life.

Show them they are important.

Tell them before it’s too late.

Make yourself a priority.

TFGL7

Really, I have to say this??  But yes, I do.  Be you!  Speak up for yourself.  As a woman, I feel like we make a LOT of concessions for the betterment of those around us.  But, it is ok to take a stand for ourselves.  So, be ok and PROUD of the fact that you have a voice.

With that being said, don’t be an ass…lol!

Find the silver lining.

silver-linings

Even on the worst days, there are silver linings.  You just need to pause.  Sometimes finding that one thing that can make you smile is all it takes to push through.  So, look for it.

So, it’s Friday.  Enjoy it.  Take a moment for yourself.  Make someone feel the value they are to you.  Breath in every moment…because it’s just a blip on your timeline.

Peace out peeps.

Whew. Part 2.

Yesterday, I started to share the story of our big family reunion over the holiday weekend.  Because it’s my blog and I make the rules around this place (about the only place I can!) I decided to focus on the stunning family home first.  I mean, that’s important stuff right there!

FB_IMG_1464572461727

But while I was going through the pics from the day, I realized there was so much else that happened that was EQUALLY as cool!  I know, it’s hard to comprehend…but my family…is awesome!  We are definitely a group of talented, passionate characters!

We like food.  Not just any food either, but good food.  Really good food.

So, the prized guest as this event was Mr. Pig.

IMG_20160528_153523502

While my Uncle was toiling over Mr. Pig….my Momma was toiling over the Mini Piggies!

IMG_20160528_131542874

Oh. My. Gosh.

I know, cuter than you can handle huh?

It gets better!!

Wait for it……..

You know, you really can’t do “Wait for it…” in a blog?

Because I can’t control your pace at reading.

Well, I guess I sorta can….

BECAUSE I JUST DID!!!!! LOL!!!!

Ok, what you’ve been waiting for!

IMG_20160528_131555293

Look at their little butts!!  The tails!!!  I mean, come on…that’s adorable!

IMG_20160528_131605651

Now, here’s the tale that goes with these darlings.  They were made out of a quilt that originally came from the farmhouse.  My mom took the quilt apart and made these pigs for all of the 1st cousins to have an heirloom from the farm.

Talk about heritage and tradition, huh?  It runs deep in our clan.

Even the rag rug this piggy is laying on.  It was made on my great-great-10x-grandfather’s loom.  Which, I currently have in my classroom at school for my students to use!

IMG_20160601_104331292

You know what else runs deep in our clan?

Crazy.

Truth.

I mean, it’s in my veins…I feel it, can’t avoid it.  I just feel bad for anyone near me when the need to do/make something hits.

Like my Momma.

It was documented.  The picture of her working on these at 3:15 in the morning the night before the reunion (for the record, she stayed up until 5)

But I love her.

Plus, I love oxygen…so I won’t share the pic dad sent.

Now all of the Mini Piggies are in homes with our family members and hopefully will continue to be passed down through the generations.

Lucky for me, my family also LOVES photos….so I’ll leave you with this little blast from the past.

Me. Circa 1997.  Good thing I still love bibs!  Btw…2016 is the “Summer of the Bib-Overall”. Watch for it.   Big news.

Peace out peeps.
